Elden Ring's Evasion Move Deserves Recognition
If you've played the popular action RPG, or most other action-adventure title, you're probably familiar with the glorious technique referred to as the “rolling dodge.” This defensive move lets your avatar to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to avoid any enemy attacks and create distance from opponents. Sounds handy, doesn't it?
This rolling move, nevertheless, has received significant backlash, and not just due to the tumbling; it's been called foolish, a easy way out, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I see the point. Picture me rolling around nearby enemy groups in The Witcher 3 — untouchable! But this game's dodge roll represents the evasion to outdo all previous rolling dodges, and I'll tell you why.
For this particular game, the designers identified an excellent method to respond to all views suggesting the technique is overly simple: just grant all foes unreasonable strength, increase it further, and every Tarnished who dares come near them will be eternally grateful for their dodge-roll ability, myself included. With so much on the line, successfully rolling to victory seems like an accomplishment, instead of an unfair advantage.
No alternative avoidance technique in the game matches this feeling of accomplishment and dependability, as quick dashes offer limited distance and defensive postures get quickly shattered by powerful foes. One player advised hopping as the main game dodging technique, but in addition to lacking perfect repositioning, I couldn't understand how receiving a fatal blow could enhance my odds of overcoming challenges (lack of skill, maybe).
Mastering the Technique
Although the rolling dodge provides relief in a famously difficult title, it demands ability. First of all, this title's rolling dodge just activates a frame of protection following you let go of the dodge button, which stops a quick, panicky escape from dangerous scenarios. Furthermore, although it may move you aside from enemies, it's much better to employ it as a chance to advance, ideally to their rear, and strike blows. And, finally, you must still understand and anticipate foe assaults, since evading too early of a long charging animation may end your invincibility prior to the hit connecting… which will seriously hurt.
A Harmonious System
While dodge-rolling in fast repetition could appear somewhat silly (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't truly feasible in the game. Of course, that fails to transform it into a believable fighting maneuver — exactly the reason it would be dreadful to see it in a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — but this is a spectacular magical game being considered, thus why worry?
Like any proper dodge roll, this title's dodge motion is improved by a little somersault-y hop at the beginning, providing a dynamic sensation rather than plopping the player downward. Based on your equipment, the maneuver might appear incredibly quick or somewhat sluggish, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the evasion moves featured in the previous titles. Certainly, you may embed your big blade into the ground when wielding such equipment, but that's your own fault for failing to use a crossbow (Just kidding — don't play the game with a crossbow).
Optimal Harmony
Elden Ring's avoidance feature forms an optimal harmony between obstacle and possibility, providing prospects of success while risking the loss of that hope at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll obtain not only success, but fulfillment.
