Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
