This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence
A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities.
