Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
